Problem
The team’s daily communication ran on Slack, a paid platform billed per user. The bill grew with every new hire, the company’s messages and files were stored on the vendor’s servers, and the tool could only be changed in the ways the vendor allowed.
Solution
- Zulip, an open-source team chat, chosen as the replacement for Slack.
- Installed and configured on a virtual server on AWS, under the client’s own account.
- Set up for the team’s daily work, so people could switch from Slack to the new chat.
Result
- No per-user licence fees: the company pays only for the virtual server.
- All messages and files live on the company’s own server, and the company fully owns its data.
- Because the code is open source, the company can change the chat and add its own features and integrations when it needs them.
